Personality: Aside from being one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet, Madoka is a fairly average, normal girl. She lives a normal, happy life with her family, goes to school, hangs out with her friends... Though she doesn't excel in anything. She's not the smartest in the class, not the most athletic, or the most creative... Average really is the best description of it. Until the show gets started and everything goes to hell, her life is a good one, with few reasons for her to worry.

Mostly she's just a very kind person, someone who's always quick to comfort her friends and stand by them. As her mother says, she's not the type to lie or cheat, it's just not in her nature. It doesn't take her much to befriend people either. Honestly, she's the type who just wants everyone to be happy and get along.

And yet, Madoka is a deeply insecure girl. The fact that she's average bothers her a lot, making her feel like she really isn't anything special. And these insecurities lead to her self confidence being very low, as well as giving her something of a shy attitude. All she really wants is to be able to do more, to actually be useful. One of her fears is that she'll go through life, never accomplishing anything of worth, only being a burden on people.

This is why, in most timelines, Madoka jumps at the chance to be a magical girl. While most girls have some big wish in mind to motivate them into a contract, Madoka is ready to lay down her life to fight witches with little incentive required. In the very first timeline, she makes her contract to save a cat and in the final timeline of the show, she even says she would gladly become a magical girl just to become a magical girl.

It's a selfless attitude, but not necessarily in a good way. It's definitely a good thing to want to help others and be useful, but she tends to take it to... extremes. Throughout the show, it's clear she doesn't value her own life as much as she should. Even after finding out what happens to a magical girl's soul, she's still ready to sacrifice herself for the sake of saving Sayaka. It's because of how self sacrificing she is that Homura keeps having to go back in time, because keeping Madoka from becoming a magical girl - and thus meeting the same fate as all magical girls - is almost impossible.

Still, there's definitely a change in her attitude in the timelines where she becomes a magical girl. While in the main one we see in the show, she's meek and reserved, this isn't the case in the timelines where she does make a contract. In those, she's much more confident and outgoing. Hell, it's this Madoka that Homura first meets and begins to idolize. Give Madoka something to fight for, something she can help with, and she becomes a much more self-assured.

Of course, for the most part, who she is remains the same across all timelines. She's always a very emotional person, for one. Madoka isn't the type to hide how she feels and she feels a lot. Expect her to be cheerful and smiling when happy, but also to break down in tears when the going gets rough. She's simply too open of a person to hide her true feelings. The poor girl gets a lot of flak for crying at the drop of a hat, but honestly, given what she goes through, you can't really blame her.

And despite how emotional she gets, this doesn't mean she isn't also rational. Madoka believes in people a lot, trying to see the best in them. Which might sound naive, but it makes her one of the more level headed characters, because it means she doesn't make rash judgements about people. Even when someone is cold or rude to her, she doesn't dismiss them as being simply cruel, especially not if she's seen signs of something better there. This is why in the main timeline, even though Sayaka distrusts Homura (and for good reason), Madoka isn't so sure. She actually takes time to get to know the girl, to try to see things from her perspective.

In the timeline that this particular Madoka comes from, she's a little more beaten down. That's what happens when, you know, all but one of your friends die and you're about to turn into an abomination. She's seen what the magical girl system is truly like and because of that obviously isn't all that enthusiastic anymore. And yet, even so, even though in that timeline she's about to turn into a witch and has to ask Homura to kill her before that can happen, she still believes there are things in the world worth protecting. Maybe it's naive, but... Madoka just has too much hope inside her to give up on the world, even after all the terrible things she's gone through.

So even though, when you ignore her powers, Madoka is just an ordinary girl in most respects, she's truly extraordinary when it comes to being a good person.

Abilities/Skills: At the time she's taken from, Madoka is a magical girl. This gives her the power to summon a special weapon. In her case, it's a bow, which she can use to shoot magical energy blasts. She can summon the bow at will, even if something happens to it.

Additionally, all magical girls have their souls removed and put inside a Soul Gem. This allows them to be tougher and more agile than normal humans, taking much harsher punishments than they should be capable of. It doesn't make her invincible, of course, but it definitely helps out a lot. It also means that she can be killed and still be alright, so long as her Soul Gem isn't damaged. But, on the flip side, it makes the Gem a big weak point. If it shatters, that means instant death. Soul Gems are basically the actual magical girl, making the body just external hardware. And if the Gem and body are too far apart, the connection is broken and her body would fall limp, essentially being dead until the Gem is returned.

Using any of her abilities also drains magic. The more magic she uses, or the more she falls into despair, the darker her Soul Gem will get. If it darkens completely, it changes into a Grief Seed, which will then give birth to a Witch. The only way to revitalize a drained Soul Gem is, in fact, by using a Grief Seed to purify it. Yeah, being a magical girl is a really fun deal, huh?

SAMPLES
Network Sample: [As the video feed switches on, it takes a few seconds before Madoka realizes it's working. She lets out a surprised little gasp, then bows for a moment. When she looks up again, there's a bright smile on her face.]

Good day, everyone! Um... I hope I'm not being a bother, but I just wanted to ask something. I know we all have assigned jobs. And it's not that I want to switch or anything! But I don't want to just stick to one thing, so...

If anyone is okay with it, could I maybe watch you do your job? Just for a little while! I want to pick up even more skills, so I can help out more. I want to make sure that I'm pulling my weight, since we all have to rely on each other. And watching other people work seems like a good way to learn... I promise I won't get in the way!

Prose/Action Sample: Of all the places she ever thought she'd find herself, space has never really been on the list. But she had to admit, there were definitely worse places to be. Sure, the ship wasn't always ideal, but... There was still something really special about it. For a moment, she found herself thinking that anything would be better than the ruined remains of Mitakihara, but she quickly nipped that thought in the bud. Thinking about it like that just felt... much too selfish.

Space hadn't ever really been a special interest of hers. Some of her classmates had been more into it than her. It wasn't that she disliked it, or anything. Now, though, standing here at the observation deck... she thinks maybe she understands. It was absolutely breath-taking.

She wondered if the world Kyuubey had come from was out here somewhere. Well, maybe not... Everything about different worlds confused her a little and she wasn't sure if the galaxies really matched up like that. It was a little over her head. Mami-san would probably understand it much better than her. She'd...

...

Right. For just a moment, she almost let herself forget.

Wishing didn't really have the same appeal that it once had. Back when she was a little girl, wishing upon a star seemed so wonderful. Now, she knew better than to make thoughtless wishes. But even so... she found herself closing her eyes, clasping her hands together. Hoping with all her heart that, maybe, one day, she could be watching this view with her friends.
